USES
Simvastatin is a member of the class of medications known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or “statins.”
Simvastatin is used to increase blood levels of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL), decrease triglycerides (a kind of blood fat), and lower blood levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL).
In patients with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors, simvastatin is also used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart issues.
Adults and children who are at least ten years old are prescribed simvastatin.
WARNINGS
Rarely, simvastatin may develop in a disorder that weakens skeletal muscle, which may eventually induce renal failure. In particular, if you also have a fever, unusual fatigue, or dark colored urine, you should contact your doctor immediately if you experience inexplicable muscle discomfort, tenderness, or weakness.
Never take simvastatin for longer than your doctor has prescribed or in bigger dosages. Pay close attention to your doctor’s dosage instructions. Overdosing on this drug can have detrimental effects that could be fatal.
Inform your doctor before using this medication if you have ever had diabetes, thyroid problems, liver or kidney disease, Chinese ancestry, or if you consume more than two drinks a day.
Simvastatin may be harmful to a fetus.
SIDE EFFECTS
If you have any of the following symptoms: severe skin response (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling) or allergic reaction to simvastatin (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat), get emergency medical attention.
Kidney failure may result from the breakdown of muscle tissue brought on by simvastatin. In particular, if you also have a fever, unusual fatigue, or black urine, call your doctor immediately if you have unexplained muscle pain, soreness, or weakness.
Also, contact your physician right once if you have:
indications of a kidney issue include: feeling exhausted or breathless; little to no urination; painful or difficult urination; swelling in your feet or ankles; or
