WARNINGS
If you have hemolytic anemia (a lack of red blood cells), porphyria (a genetic enzyme disorder that causes symptoms affecting the skin or nervous system), thalassemia (a genetic disorder of red blood cells), iron overload syndrome, are an alcoholic, or receive regular blood transfusions, find out from a doctor or pharmacist if taking ferrous sulfate is safe for you.
If you believe you have taken too much of this medication, or if someone has inadvertently consumed it, get emergency medical help. Iron overload can be lethal, particularly in little children.
Nausea, intense stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, bloody coughing, coffee-ground vomit, shallow breathing, a weak, fast heartbeat, and pale skin are some of the symptoms of an overdose.
SIDE EFFECTS
If you have any of the following symptoms of a ferrous sulfate allergy: hives; trouble breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.
Make a quick call to your doctor if you have:
acute nausea or vomiting in the stomach;
crimson mucus from a cough or coffee-ground-looking vomit;
fever
tarry or bloody stool.
The following are typical adverse effects of ferrous sulfate:
constipation and diarrhea;
nausea, pain in the stomach;
verdant stool colors; or
appetite decline.
